Light pollution

Skyglow light pollution example

Night-time light pollution is a problem that is getting progressively worse. However, contrary to popular belief, astronomers do not seek a return to the dark ages before electricity, instead advocating the effective and efficient use of lighting so that it is directed where it is required.

Street lighting and flood lighting which leaks skywards does not assist anyone, and is energy inefficient. To get an idea of why inhabitants of cities, towns and other built-up areas are now denied so much of the night sky, click here to open a new browser window showing the extent of the stray light emanating from earth that is visible from space. Click on the bottom right of the picture to enlarge it to regular size, maximise the window, and use the scrollbars to navigate.

If you would like advice on any aspect of lighting you are considering here in the Isle of Man, please contact Angela Bridson who leads our local Campaign for Dark Skies. Please note though, the use of the term "Dark Skies", not dark world.

Below, you will find links to websites in the UK and elsewhere with similar aims, offering practical advice for both domestic and commercial organisations on how to achieve the illumination they require without destroying everyone's view of the night sky.
