I was hoping to visit the observatory but your website totally confuses me. Whoever built the website hasn't aligned all the fields correctly so you can't see some of it.

Hi Clair, Sorry to hear you are having difficulty with the website. Perhaps you could provide some more detail with regard to the exact issue by emailing me, webmaster@iomastronomy.org. I'll need to know what the problem is, along with the browser, screen resolution, and operating system you are using to see if I can replicate this. Hope to hear from you soon, and see you at one of our meetings.

Hello, is there anyone out there that would be able to help me with showing me how to use a new telescope [Celestron Reflector].I am a complete beginner to Astronomy. The Courses i have looked into and books appear to focus more on where to look for specific stars. I actually need the first part. I am willing to pay for private tuition or if anyone has any suggestions i would be grateful to receivce them. thank you

on November 10th at 6.40am I saw a large comet from my back garden. I live in Willaston, it was so clear! Did anyone else record a sighting.

At 10.25pm this evening looking through our window facing south, coming from a westerly direction, heading east, was a white light on an orbit, very bazaar and strange. A bit like a paper bag with a candle under it but travelling much faster. Did anyone else see it? When it went past, the flame was an orangey red?????

I have not had any other sightings reported. One explanation could be a Chinese sky lantern. These are made of a paper balloon shape with a candle or fuel cell which is lit as the source of heat to make them rise. These are often mistaken for UFO's and are sometimes released in groups or formations. see- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kongming_lantern This fits in with your description. regards James Martin |

Hi Sue, there is a meteor shower known as the Persieds which has been active from late July and will continue to late August. There will be plenty of meteors over the nights of 11th and 12th when your likely to see meteors every few minutes. The meters will appear to come from a north east direction, from the constellation of Perseus. Lets hope the sky will be cloud free on these nights. Regards. Dave Storey |
